What is
Cystoplus®?
Cystoplus® is a non-prescription natural health product, indicated for the symptomatic relief of the burning and stinging associated with cystitis in adult women.1
The recommended duration of use is 48 hours.1
How does
Cystoplus® work?
The medicinal ingredient of Cystoplus® is sodium citrate, which is an alkalizing agent clinically proven to provide significant cystitis symptom relief by decreasing the acidity of the urine (raising the pH), thereby reducing the painful burning sensation and stinging associated with cystitis.2*
How should I advise
my patients to take Cystoplus®?
Cystoplus® is a convenient 48-hour course of symptomatic treatment.
Advise your patients to take 1 sachet 3 times per day for 2 days.1 Explain that they need to dissolve the contents of one sachet of cranberry-flavoured powder into a glass of water and to stir well until granules have dissolved.1
Counsel patients to take all six sachets to complete the symptomatic treatment even if they are feeling better.1
Advise your patients not to take more than three sachets in one day.1 If they accidentally take more, advise them to seek medical advice immediately.1
Important
Do not recommend
Cystoplus® if the patient is
Pregnant
Breastfeeding
Men
Children
When should I recommend Cystoplus®?
Consider recommending Cystoplus® in the following situations:
When you prescribe an antibiotic*†
- No interactions were found between sodium citrate and can be used with nitrofurantoin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and fosfomycin based on the latest available data3–5
For cystitis in adult women
- To relieve burning pain1
- To relieve stinging1
- For effective symptomatic relief1
Important
|
The patient should not repeat the treatment without medical advice.
- *Open study involving 205 women presenting with symptoms of cystitis and no clear evidence of bacterial infection. Symptoms were assessed at study entry and on the third day (severity of symptoms evaluated on a fourpoint scale: absent, mild, moderate, severe).2
- †Although Cystoplus® Sodium Citrate Powder is not contraindicated for use with antibiotics, unknown interactions may exist. Patients should always inform their primary care provider if they are taking any other medication. With its alkalizing effect on urine, sodium citrate can affect the excretion of certain antibiotics and alter their pharmacokinetic profile. Health care professionals must use clinical discretion.
